Quriil

Quriil

Quriil [qoˈɻeːɫ] is an isolate language spoken by the Tinjaavilh Pwmikit, an ex-military sect in the Underground of the Cloud Palace. All of its speakers are bilingual speakers of Quriil and Nyirvón, but the two languages have rather little influence on each other.

Conlanging background

Quriil’s phonology is inspired by Aleut. Also, I wanted to have a language with a logographic script. Still, this language is not much more than a draft at the moment.

The vowels of Quriil

Quriil’s vowels come in three phonemic places of articulations and three lengths each. Their actual quality depends on the preceding consonant and whether they are in a stressed or unstressed syllable. Up to five different positions are distinguished:

  • Word-initially
  • After a labial consonant
  • After an apical (alveolar) consonant
  • After a dorsal (lateral, retroflex, palatal) consonant
  • After a radical (velar, uvular) consonant

Super-short vowels may be dropped and vocalize preceding continuants instead (indicated by the vocalized nasals in the table below).

How Quriil’s vowels are pronounced depending on the preceding consonant in stressed (+str) and unstressed (-str) position.

Writing System

Quriil uses a logographic writing system derived from the Rasvrisu script.

Grammar

For some character and place names, I have established some suffixes, although they can be replaced once the language is more fleshed out:

  • -lh: A genitive, as in Tinjaavilh Pwmikit “Tinjaavii’s children”
  • -Vt: The plural, as in pwmikit “children” (from pwmik “child”)
  • -(u)q: Another genitive, used in family names, as in Salandaar Tliiruzjiq Mwkhaashuq “Salandaar (child) of Tliiruzji (and) of Mwkhaash”
